The town exploded more than a century ago as the pearling industry blossomed, bringing with it many Asian immigrants. Over the years, Chinese, Japanese, European and Aboriginal cultures have combined to make Broome something special. In the early days, it was pearl shell that the luggers and their courageous divers sought, and there’s plenty of that dangerous history to soak up here. These days, the industry is focused on the cultured pearl. You can take a tour of a pearl farm, or browse the many world- class pearl jewellery studios and art galleries in Chinatown.
