Kakadu / Bungles 4WD
Safari Darwin
- Broome This nine day adventure explores
a diverse range of landscapes across
two states and four National Parks.
You will experience unique Aboriginal
art, the waterways and tropical plants/wildlife
of Kakadu, stunning Katherine gorge,
the huge tiger-striped domes and tranquil
pools of the Bungle Bungles, and the
ancient Devonian reef system of Geikie
gorge.

1

We
leave Darwin today visiting
the Mamukala bird observatory
and Park Headquarters in
Kakadu National Park, one
of Australia's most significant
wilderness areas. We view
the Aboriginal art and the
breathtaking panorama of
the East Alligator River
floodplain from Ubirr. Overnight
at a camping park at Mardugal
or Jabiru

2

|
This
morning we can take an optional
sunrise boat trip along
the Yellow Waters billabong
where up to one third of
Australia's birdlife can
be seen and possibly some
estuarine crocodiles. Later
today we tackle 4WD track
to experience the spectacular
Jim Jim and Twin Falls.
We drive to Gunlom Falls
and camp for the night.
Note:
access to the falls is dependent
on track conditions.

A
refreshing morning swim
at the natural pool or for
the more energetic, climb
to the top of the falls
for a great view. Heading
now for Katherine Gorge
National Park where you
can view the towering sandstone
cliffs on the gorge taking
an optional boat cruise
or canoe trip, or perhaps
take one of the many walking
tracks.

Day 4

We
leave early this morning
and head west, driving via
Victoria River and Timber
Creek. We cross the border
into Western Australia,
adjust our watches and drive
through the Ivanhoe Crossing
to arrive at Kununurra where
we can enjoy a mango smoothie
at the Dairy Farm.

A
full day in Kununurra to
relax around the pool or
explore the area including
optional activities: canoeing,
scenic flights, abseiling,
fishing for Barramundi.

6

|
Our
first stop after Kununurra
is at a secluded swimming
hole, before visiting the
renowned Warmun Art Centre
to view artwork from leading
Aboriginal artists in residence.
We continue our journey
to Purnululu (Bungle Bungle)
National Park driving for
several hours via 4WD-only
access tracks. After setting
up camp we experience a
magnificent Bungle Bungle
sunset.

Day 7
|

|
There
is a lot more to the Bungles
than the beehive-shaped
domes, and today we will
discover the delights of
this wilderness paradise
at Frog Hole, Mini-Palms
Gorge and Echidna Chasm.
We walk through the tiger-striped
sandstone domes at picanniny
Creek to the spacious cavern
of Cathedral Gorge, with
an optional helicopter flight
also available.

8

After
a bumpy start to the day
along the 4WD tracks, we
hit the bitumen again and
stop at the old goldmining
town of Hall's Creek en
route to Fitzroy Crossing,
camping on the banks of
the Fitzroy River. Optional
boat trip this afternoon
past the colourful cliffs
of Geikie Gorge, part of
the Devonian Reef system,
with the chance to view
some of the local wildlife.

9
|
|
Today
we head for the pearl town
of Broome, stopping for
photos at one of the many
stands of Boab trees that
dominate the landscape.
We arrive in Broome early
afternoon, and tonight we
will enjoy a farewell sausage
sizzle as the sun sets on
Cable Beach.
