Great
Southern Railways

The
golden days of train travel are here again as more and more discerning
holiday makers are discovering the relaxing pace and wonderful hospitality
presented by the great train journeys of the modern era. Riding
one of Australia’s great trains is a very different kind of holiday
experience because ‘getting there’ truly is half the fun. Your holiday begins
the moment you step aboard. It isn’t difficult to imagine yourself
as a guest in a distinctive hotel. But as the train gets underway,
you soon realise that no hotel on earth can present you with the
kaleidoscope of colours and scenery which flash continuously past
your panoramic cabin window.
Your Gold Kangaroo Service twin sleeper
cabin is an intimate lounge by day and a twin bedded room at night
with its own compact ensuite bathroom. And only a great train can
gently rock its guests to sleep as they snuggle beneath their doonas
as the train races through the crisp desert night air. The unexpected pleasure
aboard one of Australia’s great trains is that you find yourself
with lots of time. Time for solitude and time to socialise. Time
to relax and enjoy the finer things in life.

In the lounge, your
bartender dispenses just the right amount of friendly banter along
with your favourite drink while you indulge in a bit of train spotting.
You’ll quickly discover the company of new found friends from all
corners of the globe. After drinks, you’ll make your way to an elegant
restaurant car where livened waiters guide you through a superb
menu including Australian native cuisine. The meals are lovingly
prepared in the train’s own galley by on-board chefs. Special dietary
requests can be accommodated. With your three course dinner you
may wish to choose from our excellent selection of premium Australian
wines.
When you return to your cabin, you’ll find your bunks turned
down by your steward who will be eager to attend your every need.
And as you settle down to slumber to the gentle rhythms of the train
at night, the chief engineer pilots his powerful locomotive on ribbons
of steel across a mighty spinifex desert lit by a billion stars. In the morning,
after delivering you a wake up ‘cuppa’ in bed, your cabin will be
made up whilst you enjoy breakfast. Beams of bright, morning light
splash through the windows of the dining car as you share the promise
of an exciting day with new companions.
Just when you are feeling
the need to stretch your legs outside, the great train glides to
a gentle stop offering optional off-train sight-seeing tours at
places of interest along the way. While the iron horse refuels,
you may linger awhile with the locals and savour the delights of
our most famous outback towns such as Kalgoorlie and Broken Hill.
Come with us now
as we look more closely at the wonders of the Indian Pacific, The
Legendary Ghan, and our captivating collection of holiday packages.

The
Indian Pacific (Sydney-Adelaide-Perth)
gives you two oceans on one of the world's longest and greatest
train journeys. But most of your cruising will be across the vast
continent of Australia. From the spectacular Blue Mountains to the
treeless plains of The Nullarbor, where the train travels the world's
longest straight stretch of railway track (478 kilometres), see
unique landscapes unfold and spot a fascinating array of wildlife
from the comfort of the lounge or your cabin. All along the Indian
Pacific route, keep an eye out for a sighting of the magnificent
Australian wedge tailed eagle, the symbol of this great train. It's
massive wingspan of up to two metres will make it easy to spot in
a clear desert sky. Get up close and see the sights of some of our
most famous outback towns when you enjoy an optional off-train sightseeing
tour. The great train offers these tours during scheduled stops
at Broken Hill, Adelaide and gold rich Kalgoorlie. (More

The Ghan (Adelaide–Alice
Springs–Darwin). It’s an odd name for a train but in Australian
history it is a living legend. Boarding The Ghan in Adelaide or
Darwin, experience one of the most fascinating great train journeys
of the world. Connections are available on the Indian Pacific and
The Overland for guests travelling to or from Sydney and Melbourne.
Enjoy 2 nights aboard this great train in either direction. Marvel
at the spectacular Australian landscapes from fertile countryside
surrounding Adelaide to the rusty hues of the Red Centre, onto the
tropical splendour of the Top End. The Ghan is the ultimate journey
through the heart of the continent.
The Overland
commenced service in 1887, pioneering intercapital rail travel between
Melbourne and Adelaide. The century old name came
from the term "Overlander", an adventurer who had travelled
across the country. The Overland today remains a comfortable
and convenient way to travel between these two southern cities.
