Bush Safari Company, Safaris of the Outback

Bush Safari Company, Safaris of the Outback

REX ELLIS
Rex Ellis began his safari operations in 1965. Previously working on S.A. and W.A. sheep stations as a jackeroo and overseer and later as a fencing contractor. A keen naturalist (with a special interest in birds), his safaris are all nature orientated and have observed the conservation ethic long before the term "ecotourism" was coined.

As Australia’s longest operating outback safari guide and an early pioneer in the industry, there are many firsts to his credit. They include regular operations in the 1960s to the Great Australian Bight coastline. Nullarbor and all of the western desert regions, as well as the Kimberly (including boat, walking, and helicopter off the coast). Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf country followed soon after and in 1971 he organized and led the first commercial tourist party across the Simpson Desert, opening up this area for the many private parties that now make the crossing.

Camels In 1974 his famous boat safaris became prominent with the first-time journey down the flooding Diamantina River, followed by a full crossing of lake Eyre. Several boat trips were run down Cooper Creek that year, including ‘voyages’ on the inland sea of Lake Eyre.

1976 saw camel safaris become a major part of the business. Contemporary expeditions resulted in many crossings of all the Australian deserts, including a full crossing (Steep Point to Byron Bay) of Australia in 1988. In 1979 the extremely rare night parrot was ‘rediscovered’ on Cooper Creek, and in 1990 an 84 camel expedition made a cross country traverse from the MacDonnell Ranges to the Indian Ocean.

4x4Among famous Australians carried by this company are former prime Minister Malcolm Fraser (when in office), naturalists Vincent Serventy, Eric Worrell and artists John Olsen and Clifton Pugh. He continues to offer what are arguably the most adventurous, innovative and diverse outback experiences available in Australia.
