Leaving Adelaide we head directly north to Woomera to learn about Len Beadell, before we cross on the Great Central Road into WA. We head for Mt Augustus and the Kennedy Range National Parks in the Gascoyne Region, where we get to do some great walking. From there we head for the coast and Ningaloo Reef marine park. At Coral Bay we go on a day trip to take in the wonders of this natural heritage area. The Pilbara areas itself promises great day hikes such as those we take in the national parks of Millstream, Chichester and Karajini. The journey back to Adelaide is an exploration in itself with a trip across the Nullarbor on the India Pacific railway.
Day 1 Departing
Adelaide at 8 am we travel north through Pt Augusta to Woomera
were we camp the night. Day 2 We continue north along the Stuart Highway to camp the night at Kulgera. Day 3 We head west via Yulara on to the Great Cental road camping the night at Docker River near the WA border. Day 4 We
head into WA visiting various Len Beadell memorials including
the Giles weather station before Warbuton. Day 5 We head for Laverton & Leanora for supplies and camp past Leinster in a bush camp. Day 6 Driving via Sandstone and Meekatharra we travel to Mt Augustus Resort for a 2 night stop. Day 7 We climb Mt Augustus. (12km 6 hours) Day 8 A morning in the bus to Kennedy Range NP and an afternoon walk. (3km 2 hours) Day 9 Crossing the Gascoyne we head for Carnarvon and supplies before turning north and heading for Coral Bay and a 2-night stop. Day 10 A day onboard a sailing catamaran exploring the Ningaloo Reef, including snorkelling. Day 11 From Exmouth we head into the Pilbara for a 3-night stop in Tom Price. Day 12 A lazy day around Tom Price including a mine tour and an evening drive to the top of Mt Nameless giving views of Tom Price & the mine. Day 13 A day trip to Millstream - Chichester National park. Day 14 We venture into Karajini NP setting out to climb Mt Bruce (9km 6 hours) before heading to Dales Gorge camping area for a 3-night camp. Day 15 Exploring Karijini NP we visit Weano, Hancock & Kalamina Gorges. Day 16 Exploring Karijini NP we visit Circular pool, Dales gorge and the Visitors centre. Day 17 We head south via Newman towards Meekatharra for a bush camp. Day 18 Via Meekatharra we explore the area around Mt Magnet & Sandstone. Day 19 We drive to Kalgoorlie and spend the afternoon exploring this historical mining town. We camp in a caravan park. Day 20-21 We put you on the Indian Pacific at 0100 hours in a gold class sleeper cabin (either double or single) and you will travel across the Nullarbor in style back to Adelaide arriving at 0730 hours on the morning of day 21. |
