 12 Day Finke River Safari

Tour mapTravelling north via the Flinders Ranges we head for the vast expanse of Lake Eyre. We track the route of the old Ghan to Oodnadatta on our way to Dalhousie Hot Springs. On the edge of the Simpson Desert, this artesian spring system is an oasis for wildlife and humans alike.

Further north, we walk among the fascinating rock formations of Watarrka (Kings Canyon), before heading into the upper reaches of the Finke River to explore Palm Valley. We get a bird’s eye view of the Finke’s catchment area when reaching the top of Mt. Sonder in the West MacDonnell Ranges.

Day 1 Depart Adelaide and head North along the western side of the Flinders Ranges. Bush camp

Day 2 We continue north to Marree and head up the Oodnadatta track visiting Lake Eyre and the ancient mound springs before camping at Coward Springs.

Day 3
Another day along the track via William Creek before spending the night at Algebuckina Bridge. (The longest spanning railway bridge in SA) Bush camp

Day 4 Into Oodnadatta for supplies then continuing on into Witjira National Park on the edge of the Simpson Desert spending the night at the abandoned railway siding of Pedirka. Bush camp

Day 5 We travel to Dalhousie Hot Springs and spend the day exploring the area. Bush camp

Kings CanyonDay 6 Travelling through Mount Dare and Finke and on to the geographical centre of Australia before camping at Kulgera.

Day 7 From Kulgera we travel west and head for Kings Canyon. We spend the afternoon exploring around Kings Canyon. (7km)

Day 8 Following the Mereenie Loop road we drive into Palm Valley and spend the afternoon walking and exploring the escarpment area.

Mt Sonder
Day 9 A days walk up Palm Valley exploring the ancient palms and surroundings. (12km)

Day 10 We visit Gosse Bluff (an ancient meteorite crater) before heading into the West MacDonnell ranges for a two-night camp in Redbank Gorge. Afternoons walk and swim in the gorge. Bush camp

Day 11 We climb Mount Sonder (the third highest peak in the NT) and enjoy the magnificent views of the West MacDonnell ranges and the Finke River catchment area.( 16km) Bush camp

Day 12 Return to Alice Springs with a mornings walk in Ormiston gorge.
