Further north, we walk among the fascinating rock formations of Watarrka (Kings Canyon), before heading into the upper reaches of the Finke River to explore Palm Valley. We get a bird’s eye view of the Finke’s catchment area when reaching the top of Mt. Sonder in the West MacDonnell Ranges. Day 1 Depart Adelaide and head North along the western side of the Flinders Ranges. Bush camp Day 2 We continue north to Marree and head up the Oodnadatta track visiting Lake Eyre and the ancient mound springs before camping at Coward Springs.
Day 4 Into Oodnadatta for supplies then continuing on into Witjira National Park on the edge of the Simpson Desert spending the night at the abandoned railway siding of Pedirka. Bush camp Day 5 We travel to Dalhousie Hot Springs and spend the day exploring the area. Bush camp
Day 7 From Kulgera we travel west and head for Kings Canyon. We spend the afternoon exploring around Kings Canyon. (7km) Day 8 Following the Mereenie Loop road we drive into Palm Valley and spend the afternoon walking and exploring the escarpment area.
Day 10 We visit Gosse Bluff (an ancient meteorite crater) before heading into the West MacDonnell ranges for a two-night camp in Redbank Gorge. Afternoons walk and swim in the gorge. Bush camp Day 11 We climb Mount Sonder (the third highest peak in the NT) and enjoy the magnificent views of the West MacDonnell ranges and the Finke River catchment area.( 16km) Bush camp Day 12 Return to Alice Springs with a mornings walk in Ormiston gorge. |
