We tread softly, conscious that man has been here for only a brief moment. For it was 185 million years ago,
driven by powerful currents in the earths mantle, that the ancient continent of Gondwana started to break apart.
Eventually a massive lifeboat was cast adrift carrying a precious cargo of unique plants and animals.
This is Australia and it is still drifting Northwards at the great speed of 60 kilometres every million years.
Unlike Gondwana, most of Australia has become dry and arid.
There is this small area near Cairns in Tropical North Queensland, where today you will find the remnant rainforests of Gondwana.
