SURFING
Situated 30+ nautical miles out to sea and on the continental shelf with a multitude of kinks, bends and gaps in the reef, the variety of waves is mind blowing. Depending on the many variables of weather and tide, our experienced crew will get you on the best waves on offer. Great waves can be had any time of the year with the most consistent swell April – June. NW – SE winds are off shore and the reefs collect any swell from South – North.
Surfers must come equipped with booties as breaks are over living coral reef and can be compared to Indo on their day. Breaks are suitable for long and short board riders with plenty of reef to explore between surfs.
FISHING
Operating as a fishing charter vessel for 21 years, the MV James Cook, skipper and crew can put you onto the fish…...hitting the waters of the Capricorn Bunker Group, with an overnight mooring in the sheltered lagoon of Fitzroy Reef or anchoring in the lee of one of the many reefs on offer.
Understanding fisherman’s needs and styles allows us to maximise your enjoyment.
Sport Fishing: Trolling, spinning and fly fishing. Working close around the reefs, drop offs and isolated bommies targeting pelagic species: Spanish Mackarel, Tuna, Marlin, Trevally and Reef species: Coral Trout, Green Job Fish, Rainbow Runner and many more.
Reef Fishing: Many techniques can be employed to target to large variety of reef species, these range from pinpointing small isolated pinnicals in 50 metres in search of schooling Red Emperor and deep water Coral Trout – to drifting over coral reef shoals and bommies ranging from 10-20 metres with a possibility of catching anything from Hussar to Red Throat and Coral Trout.
Deep Sea Fishing: With the continental shelf running parallel to the reef chain the opportunity of working the 100m line exists for those equipped to do so, with large schools of Snapper, Pearl Perch and Red Emperor habiting the shelf areas.
