The
Walkabout Lodge is a small resort on
the Gove Peninsula in East Arnhem Land
with absolute frontage to the Arafura
Sea.
Gove Airport enjoys regular daily jet
services from Cairns and Darwin with
connections to Australian and
International destinations. Local
permits to enter Aboriginal land are
issued by the Dhimurru Aboriginal Land
Management and may be obtained from
the Walkabout Lodge reception. These
permits allow you to visit the
magnificent scenic areas around the
Gove Peninsula.
Nhulunbuy, the main town on the Gove
Peninsula, has a population of 3,500.
It has all major shopping, banking and
health services.
Staying at the Walkabout Lodge allows
you to connect directly with the
Yolngu people of East Arnhem Land. The
culture of these people is intact with
little influence from other societies.
Other people have only been in the
region in numbers for about 30 years.
The traditions of these people have
remained undisturbed for 40,000 years.
Tourism in the region is largely
unstructured.
You may still travel around the bush,
creeks and rivers spending a day in
the life of these wonderful people and
share their unique way of life, learn
more about their art, customs and
problems of living an ancient culture
in a high-tech world.
On board one of Walkabout's boats,
relax on the water with a days scenic
adventure viewing the magnificent
remote beaches, mangroves and
wildlife. Trips by boat to remote,
uninhabited islands can be arranged
for two or three days, diving and
snorkelling are available. The coral
is spectacular.
The waters around Gove and the nearby
islands have the reputation of being
the best fishing in the world. A huge
variety of game and reef fish frequent
the many reefs, currents and
estuaries. Fishing can be arranged for
day and overnight trips.
Four wheel drive vehicles may be
rented from local companies to explore
superb remote beaches, Gayngaru
lagoon, inland waterways and untouched
wilderness. Taxis and buses service
the town and nearby areas. There are
local light aircraft and helicopters
for scenic flights.
Free tours are available every Friday
to the nearby mine and alumina
processing plant. These tours include
visits to Nambara Indigenous Art
Gallery and other scenic and historic
attractions of the region. They are
highly recommended.
