The Ghan, the Legendary Journey into the Heart of Australia Originally
The Ghan rail line followed the inland trait of the explorer john McDouall
Stuart and the old Afghan camel trains. Those early journeys of the last
century, across inhospitable waterless desert, were fraught with danger and the
unknown. Today’s modern rail adventure, with alt the comfort and style of a
distinctive hotel, follows a route rather more westerly than the first. It
crosses marvellous desert country, passing salt lakes and red rocky ranges en
route to the legendary oasis town in the very heart of the continent, Alice
Springs. From the rich wheat and barley growing country to the north of
Adelaide, the train slips quietly into the sparsely populated interior. 
Time
for a relaxing pre-dinner drink perhaps, then a delicious meal before settling
down for the night. In the morning a golden sunrise and a promise of
adventure ahead. Ayers Rock / Uluru, Kings Canyon and the stunning MacDonnell
Ranges are beckoning once you step off the train in “a town like Alice’. From
Adelaide the train travels the 1,555 kms to Alice Springs in one day and one
night. From Melbourne travel 2,383 kms taking one and a half days and
two nights, from Sydney the trip takes nearly two days and two nights. Restaurant
Dining
To enjoy fine food and wine whilst travelling in a famous train, with panoramic
views across a vast continent, is a marvellous experience. All meals with waiter
service are part of Gold Kangaroo Service on the train and all served in a beautifully
decorated and luxurious Restaurant Car. Elegant china, fine glassware and
cutlery add the finishing touches. Fine a-la-carte menus are available
featuring native Australian cuisine, cooked to perfection. Choose from dishes
such as Grilled Lime and Ginger Snapper served with a lime and ginger Thai sauce
and julienne vegetables. Excellent wines are available for purchase. Vegetarian,
children's and special meals available upon request at time of booking.

Gold Kangaroo Service:
Select a twin or single steeper cabin. Gold Kangaroo twin cabins feature private
ensuite with shower and toilet facilities. Single cabins offer most features of
the twin cabin with the exception of showers and toilets, which are located at the end of
each carriage. Stylish restaurant car dining is included in the fare. Enjoy a
drink in the cosy, club like setting of the Gold Kangaroo Lounge where you can
meet new people from all corners of the world.

and Red Kangaroo Service on The Overland differ from the Indian
Pacific and The Ghan.
Red Kangaroo
Service:
Choose between a sleeper cabin or daynighter seat. Red Kangaroo Sleeper Cabin: Comfortable
twin share sleeping accommodation with private washing facilities (shower and
toilet facilities at end of carriage). Red Kangaroo Daynighter Seat.
Relax in comfortable, reclining chairs with ample leg room, individual reading
lights and video entertainment (shower and toilet facilities at end of
carriage). Red Kangaroo Service guests can
purchase light meals, snacks and beverages from the Diner or Buffet Car
.
