DAYS KAKADU Travelling in the comfort of a luxurious fully equipped air-conditioned 4WD vehicle with a maximum of just 6 passengers, this personalised upmarket 4WD tour takes in the best of the famous Kakadu National Park and visits an Aboriginal community in Aboriginal owned Arnhem Land. Accommodation is one night at Cooinda Lodge and one night at the Crocodile Hotel. Cooinda Lodge is conveniently located just 1km from Yellow Waters and has a more rustic outback atmosphere while the Crocodile Hotel is famous for its unique architecture and located further north in the township of Jabiru. Day 1: Depart Darwin accommodation at around 8am. Our first stop is Fogg Dam, a vast open wetland area that is home to large numbers of birds during our Top End dry season. Moving on we cross the Marrakai plains, the Adelaide and Mary Rivers before our morning tea stop at the Bark Hut Outback Pub. We then turn off the highway down the old Jim Jim dirt track into Kakadu with the opportunity for viewing bird and wildlife at waterholes along the way. Enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch with billy tea/coffee overlooking a pristine billabong. We continue on to Cooinda to join a sunset cruise on the famous Yellow Waters billabong, abundant with many species of birds and of course the mighty salt water crocodile. Tonight our accommodation is at Gagudju Cooinda Lodge. (L) Day 2: After breakfast we head north to the Bowali Visitor Centre and then on to the Nanguluwur rock art and occupation sites. This site is less well known and well away from the crowds but has some excellent examples of rock art, including the rare and ancient dynamic figures. There are also the famous x-ray style art and so called contact period art when Aboriginal people had first contact with white man. Your guide will explain the art and culture of the area. We return to Cooinda for a buffet lunch. Later visit the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre before heading south along the 4WD track to Maguk (Barramundie Gorge) spend the afternoon in this picturesque area. At the end of a monsoonal forest walk you can enjoy a swim in the refreshing natural plunge pool with a waterfall. Tonight our accommodation is at the Gagudju Crocodile Hotel in Jabiru. (B, L) Day 3: After an early breakfast we head further north along the Magela wetlands following the escarpment to the Ubirr rock art sites dated in excess of 20,000 years. Your guide will explain the art and its importance to local Aboriginal culture. There are excellent views overlooking Arnhem Land. Later join an Aboriginal guided cruise on East Alligator River. After an a la carte lunch at the Crocodile Hotel we begin our journey back to Darwin viewing wetlands and billabongs along the way. We take a break at the Bark Hut Outback Pub arriving in Darwin around sunset. (B, L) Includes: all morning teas, breakfasts & lunches.
