Lodge/Hotel accommodated & Camping - permanent tented base camp

Travelling with a maximum of just 6 passengers in the comfort of a luxurious fully equipped air-conditioned 4WD vehicle, this drive/fly tour combines the best of the famous Kakadu National Park with the unique opportunity to visit a very restricted area of Aboriginal owned Arnhem Land and the comforts of Seven Spirit Bay Wilderness Lodge.

Day 1:  Depart Darwin accommodation at around 8am. Our first stop is Fogg Dam a vast open wetland area that is home to large numbers of birds during our Top End dry season. Moving on we cross the Marrakai plains, the Adelaide and Mary Rivers before our morning tea stop at the Bark Hut Outback Pub. We then turn off the highway down the old Jim Jim dirt track into Kakadu with the opportunity for viewing bird and wildlife at waterholes along the way. Enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch with billy tea/coffee overlooking a pristine billabong. Then travel on to the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre before checking into Gagudju Cooinda Lodge our accommodation for the next two nights. Join a sunset cruise on the famous Yellow Waters, abundant with many species of birds and of course the mighty salt water crocodile.

Day 2:  After breakfast we head north to the Nanguluwur rock art and occupation sites. This site is less well known and well away from the crowds but has some excellent examples of rock art, including the rare and ancient dynamic figures. There are also the famous x-ray style art and so called contact period art when Aboriginal people had first contact with white man. Your guide will explain the art and culture of the area. We then visit Bowali Visitor Centre and Park Headquarters. After lunch we head south along the 4WD track to Maguk (Barramundie Gorge) spend the afternoon in this picturesque area. At the end of a monsoonal forest walk you can enjoy a swim in the refreshing natural plunge pool below a beautiful perennial waterfall. Late afternoon Fishing return to Cooinda Lodge overnight.

Days 3 & 4:
Enjoy a 40 minute scenic light aircraft flight departing from Cooinda bush airstrip to Seven Spirit Bay. At the multi award winning wilderness lodge Seven Spirit Bay activities are determined by you and your interests. You may want to participate in professionally guided bush walks, enjoy wildlife spotting or take a historic tour to the ruins of Victoria Settlement - one of the early attempts by the British to settle the North of Australia.

There are also Crocodile spotting tours or maybe fishing is your passion and many other activities. Or you may just want to sit back and enjoy the magical environment of this tropical retreat. At Seven Spirit Bay the choice is yours.

Accommodation is in hexagonal shaped bungalows with louvered windows on five sides to allow you to enjoy the outside environment. Dining is in the social hub beside the freshwater swimming pool. The cuisine is first class international standard, yet unique to SSB. We call it “Cobourg Cuisine” influenced by Malaysian, Thai, Indonesian and Aboriginal cooking. Seven Spirit Bay is a luxurious retreat away from the ordinary world.

Day 5:  A fascinating journey back in time. We fly you deep into Western Arnhem Land to a private bush airstrip at Mt Borradaile, then travel by open air 4WD for this once in a lifetime experience.

You will find no boardwalks, signposts, sealed roads or barriers out here. Aboriginal people have roamed, hunted and gathered throughout this land for at least 60,000 years. They have left the evidence of their occupation in caves and under rocky overhangs by way of grind holes in the sandstone where they prepared their food and also by way of some of the most colourful, prolific and oldest rock art to be seen anywhere in the world. Understand the meanings behind the ancient rock art galleries with interpretation by experienced and knowledgeable guides. There is literally layer upon layer of colourful paintings. Some dating back more than 25,000 years, including the famous X-ray style right up to art of the more recent, so called contact period, adorning the rock walls and caves of the many sandstone outcrops in the area. Overlooking vast wetlands these galleries provide a fascinating sight into an ancient world.

Learn about the burial rites of this ancient culture Discover the beauty of the bush, eucalypt forests, vast floodplains, billabongs and coastal wilderness, abundant in native birds and animals - the red tail black cockatoo, magpie geese, brolga, jabiru, wallaby, frilled neck lizard, goanna and dingo to name but a few. Learn about traditional foods and medicines. Late afternoon fly on to Darwin. ETA 5.30pm..

Includes: all morning teas, breakfasts and lunches. Including all meals at SSB.
Excludes: evening meals at Kakadu and alcohol.
Entry into Arnhem Land is by special permit only, which we will arrange for you.
