ITINERARY
Day 1: Yellow Waters Wetlands
Turning off the Stuart Highway, we travel along the Arnhem Highway passing the major river systems and wetland regions into Kakadu National Park. After crossing the South Alligator River we begin to explore the World Heritage Area of Ubirr Rock where we climb up through the ancient Aboriginal rock art galleries to the lookout for the famous view over surrounding wetlands. We then visit the Bowali Centre with informative displays, and continue to Cooinda to join Kakadu’s fabled Yellow Waters Wetland Cruise to experience the beauty of the Kakadu wetlands.
Accommodation: Cooinda – choice of hotel or tented
(Lunch)
Day 2: Nourlangie Rock
Today’s highlights include visits to Nourlangie Rock region and Anbangbang Billabong which includes spectacular Arnhem Land Escarpment views, ancient Aboriginal occupation sites and pristine freshwater environments. We also venture off the beaten track to Barramundi Gorge, where a 2km return walk through paperbark forest leads to a small waterfall and clear plunge pool with the opportunity to swim. This walk is graded moderate with difficult areas requiring some agility in rougher parts of the track. Late afternoon we make our way out of Kakadu National Park, viewing Jabiru Township and pausing for an evening snack (own expense) at the Bark Hut Inn. Arrive Darwin mid evening.
(Lunch)
We supply: Air-conditioned tour vehicle (group size 4-25 passengers), Yellow Water Wetlands Cruise, all meals as stated above, complimentary light breakfast on Day 2 (May-Nov), tented accommodation in large, quality tents with real beds (twin share basis with linene provided) OR air-conditioned budget or hotel accommodation within Kakadu National Park, iced water throughout tour and a competent NT resident guide.
You will need: Small bag (due to space limitations), swimwear, towel, sunscreen, hat, personal requisites, camera with plenty of film, comfortable, sturdy, non-slip walking shoes, insect repellent and a small water bottle. Dinners are at the passengers own expense. Flashlight/torch for tented option.
Special note: Tour not suitable for children under five years of age. This tour requires a reasonable level of fitness as there is some walking and climbing required in Kakadu National Park. All travellers should be encouraged to have adequate travel insurance. In the event seasonal conditions prevent access to Ubirr Rock and/or Barramundi Gorge, the group will visit other attractions such as Nanguluwur, Gubara Pools or Nawulandja. This tour is also available with a French speaking guide.
