The
Cod Hole is located 200 km to the north
of Cairns and has become famous for
it's family of resident Potato Cod (Groper).
Each of these huge fish can weigh up
to 100 kg and are well accustomed to
posing for diver's cameras.
The
Ribbon Reefs are a string of 10 coral
ramparts of the GREAT BARRIER REEF stretching
southward from the Cod Hole. Coral formations
vary from beds of huge plate corals
to isolated pinnacles sustaining an
amazing display of fish life, to walls
and channels for the perfect drift dives
as well as caves, canyons and shallow
coral gardens.
Divers
can expect to encounter the enormous
giant clams, golden gorgonian fans,
and clouds of colourful tropical fish,
as well as cruising pelagics, moray
eels, green turtles, reef sharks and
the giant Napoleon Wrasse

Be
prepared for an amazing range of diving
experiences on your 4 day /4 night adventure
to Australia's Coral Sea. Your first
day will include a couple of orientation
dives on the outer reefs of the GBR
before travelling out to the oceanic
wilderness of the Coral Sea. To the
south east, east and north east of Cairns
and at least 100km offshore from the
Great Barrier Reef, lie Australia's
Coral Sea Reefs.
Spirit
of Freedom will travel to two Coral
Sea Reef systems for 3 days of diving
which can include South Flinders, Flinders,
Dart, East Holmes, West Holmes, Flora,
Bouganville, Shark, and Osprey Reefs.
Destinations will vary and be selected
according to the prevailing weather
in order to provide you the best diving,
most comfortable conditions and maximum
dive time. A couple of exploratory dives
will always be included in this itinerary.
Sites will vary from 3,000 ft walls
to magical coral gardens to lone seamounts
emerging from the ocean depths. The
water is astoundingly clear and the
fish life will include whaler sharks,
barracuda, big eye trevally and rays
as well as the exotic cuttlefish, sea
hares and starry morays. Click here
to view a map of the dive locations.
The
Coral Sea reefs feature spectacular
walls, steep drop-offs and lone seamounts,
rising thousands of metres from the
ocean floor to just below the surface.
Renown for crystal clear water with
average visibility well in excess of
40 metres, a diver can appear suspended
in air against a vertical wall laced
with massive gorgonian fans. Sharks
and schooling pelagics cruise through
an amazing display of gorgonians, sea
whips, and bright yellow soft corals,
while nudibranch, anemones, unusual
tropical fish, invertebrates, and huge
schools of fish provide a rich variety
of marine life.
