The
Ribbon Reefs extend southwards from
Lizard Island and include the famous
‘Cod Hole’, where you can feed the Giant
Potato Cod and view a huge variety of
marine life. Onboard Taka, your trip
includes diving and snorkelling on some
of the best sites on the Great Barrier
Reef.
Taka
is a 30metre steel, monohull which can
sleep up to 30 divers and snorkellers
onboard. Cabins onboard are either Stateroom
cabins, double or twin ensuite cabins,
standard twin cabin (share facilities)
or quad share cabins (share facilities).
The
trip takes in the Ribbon Reefs as well
as the Cod Hole. There is an option
to take part in a PADI Advanced course
whilst carrying out the 10 dives available.
If
photography interests you then there
is also an option to take part in an
underwater photography course. This
course will cost you a little extra
but includes the use of a professional
underwater camera. You will need to
take along 2 rolls of slide film to
participate in the course.
ITINERARY:
TUESDAY:
Pick up from Cairns accommodation
at 5.00 pm and transfer to TAKA
which departs from Cairns Harbor
and travels over the smooth waters
inside the Great Barrier Reef up
to the Ribbon Reefs.
WEDNESDAY:
We usually start our first
day diving at Ribbon Reef No.9 (Challenger
Bay). This gives our divers a scenic
place to get back into the swing
of things and check out some beautiful
coral formations. The boat then
moves a bit further north to the
Cod Hole where we do 2 dives. The
first dive is to check out the general
geography at the Cod Hole and take
a look at the huge variety of marine
life that lives in this area. The
second dive at the Cod Hole is the
cod feed, where huge schools of
fish and Maori Wrasse compete with
the large family of Potato Cod for
a fish dinner. This would have to
be one of the world's premier diving
experiences. We do another dive
south of this area at either Pixie
Pinnacle or Harrier Reef.
THURSDAY:
Clam Garden is a favourite
dive site, with giant clams scattered
throughout the coral. Temple of
Doom, is another famous site that
we visit regularly and there are
many other sites we dive depending
on conditions. During the course
of this day you will see giant clams
up to 2 metres across, huge coral
gardens, and an abundance of marine
life unmatched on this planet. We
do 3 day dives and a night dive
on this day.
FRIDAY:
On the last day we do 2
dives as we are now nearing the
end of our trip. These dives are
on the edge of the Great Barrier
Reef at Agincourt and opal Reefs,
featuring unique coral formations
and fish life. TAKA then cruises
through the reef heading back into
Cairns at approximately 3.30 pm.
