Sovereign Resort Hotel
Hotel Facilities and Information
The Sovereign is a luxurious resort style hotel – the perfect place to relax and unwind after tackling the untamed wonderland of Cooktown and its surrounds.
With warm rich country hospitality, in fine colonial style, the Sovereign provides home comforts, which even the most intrepid explorer should not go without.
Originally constructed in 1874, at the port end of Charlotte Street, the Sovereign was transformed into a resort style hotel in 1986.
Cooktown is the gateway to one of Australia’s last frontiers – the untamed wilderness of the Cape York Peninsula. Unspoilt, it lies on the shores of the endeavour River which flows into the Coral Sea. It is Australia’s closest town to the Great Barrier Reef, and enjoys the sun soaked days and warm sea breezes of the tropics, all year round.
Founded in 1873, Cooktown was established as a booming seaport when thousands flocked to Palmer River goldfields to stake their clam. It stands on the site where, in 1770, Captain James Cook spent 48 days repairing his damaged barque, “The Endeavour”. Today Cooktown is the modern adventure seekers’ playground, offering visitors an insight into Australia’s early Aboriginal and European history, in a spectacular natural setting. It is a haven for many land based activities, while off shore the diving and deep sea fishing rate with the best in the world.
