Explore Cairns before joining our air-conditioned, custom-built 4WD vehicle discovering ancient rainforest, remote cattle stations and stunning scenery as you travel to Cape York and Thursday Island on this 13 day tour. Return to Cairns on a scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef.

Day 1. Arrive Cairns
Arrive in Cairns and transfer to your hotel. Enjoy free time to explore or relax. Go shopping, visit the casino or wander around the vibrant local markets.
Stay: Three Nights: The Hotel Cairns, close to the CBD and one block from the famous Esplanade

Day 2. Cairns at Leisure
After breakfast, the entire day is at your leisure to further discover the delights of this beautiful tropical city. Perhaps wander through Cairns picturesque parks and gardens, stroll the Esplanade or visit the Pier Market Place and Marlin Marina and Jetty to shop.

Day 3. Cairns, Kuranda
Transfer to the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway Terminal and board the Skyrail. Skim over the tree tops, stopping at Red Peak Station and Barron Falls Station. At the end of the journey, on arrival in Kuranda, catch the free shuttle bus to the markets. Alternatively, walk into Kuranda Village. At Rainforestation Nature Park, watch the Pamagirri Dancers perform in a rainforest amphitheatre. Then, on the Dreamtime Walk, you'll learn to throw a boomerang, watch spear-throwing and enjoy the sounds of the didgeridoo. Afterwards, head to Kuranda Railway Station and board the Kuranda Scenic Railway for a journey through rainforest, steep ravines and past picturesque waterfalls down the mountain to Cairns.

Day 4. Daintree River, Cape Tribulation
Travel to Daintree National Park and cruise along the Daintree River, spotting saltwater crocodiles and other wildlife. Then head to Cape Tribulation, where age old rainforest meets spectacular coastline. This is the only place in Australia where you can experience the splendour of tropical rainforest just a stone's throw from the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef. This astoundingly beautiful region was named because of the difficulties experienced by James Cook when his boat crashed into a reef off-shore.

Day 5. Bloomfield Track, Cooktown
Travel the remote and rugged Bloomfield Track to Cooktown, gateway to the Cape York Peninsula. It was here that James Cook beached his ship, the Endeavour, for repairs in 1770, making Cooktown the first European settlement on Australian soil. Visit the James Cook Museum, stroll through the historic cemetery with its Chinese shrine and visit Nature's Powerhouse in the Botanic Gardens to view an exhibition of Cape York wildlife and a collection of botanical illustrations.

Day 6. Lakefield National Park
Journey into Lakefield National Park, Queensland's second largest national park at 537,000 hectares. Stretching from Princess Charlotte Bay down to Laura, the park's near-wilderness is covered with sun-bleached grasses, paperbark woodland, mangroves, swamp and fringing rainforest. It's home to a wide variety of birds including jabirus, brolgas and many duck species, as well as colonies of fruit bats that take to the skies in the evening, and numerous wallabies. The waterways are home to timid freshwater crocodiles as well as the more dangerous saltwater variety of reptile.

Day 7. Coen, Weipa, Gulf Country
Explore the old goldmining town of Coen then drive via Mungkan Kandju National Park, with its riverine rainforest and swamps, to Weipa, on the shores of the Gulf of Carpentaria. The site of the world's largest bauxite deposit, Weipa also boasts fantastic barramundi and blue salmon fishing.

Day 8. Weipa, Moreton Telegraph Station
Join a local guide for a tour of the Weipa Bauxite Mine, the largest of its kind in the world. Afterwards, continue along rugged dirt roads through remote areas of Cape York to Moreton Telegraph Station, located on the Wenlock River. The river flows all year, although the levels can vary dramatically between the wet season and the dry season. Here, perhaps take a walk to the nearby lagoon or along the river bed.

Day 9. Cape York Peninsula
Skirting the Jardine River National Park, continue through the traditional lands of the Injinoo Aboriginal people. Native title handed much of this area back to the traditional owners, enabling the survival of the distinctive East and West Cape Aboriginal cultures. Stop at Fruit Bat Falls, where there's time for a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters, then arrive at Resort Bamaga. Enjoy the rest of today at leisure before dinner.

Day 10. Explore Cape York
Today you'll travel to the tip of the Cape York Peninsula. Disembark near beautiful Frangipani Beach and take a mildly challenging but thoroughly enjoyable walk to the tip of the peninsula to experience being at the Australian mainland's most northerly point. After taking in the sweeping views out over the Torres Strait, travel to historic Somerset, once the official government residence of the cape. Then return to the resort and enjoy time at leisure in this magnificent wilderness region.

Day 11. Thursday Island
Cross Endeavour Strait to Australia's most northerly settlement, Thursday Island. One of around 100 islands that make up the Torres Strait Islands, Thursday Island is home to 3,000 people, primarily of Melanesian descent. Today a multicultural outpost, Thursday Island was once a base for pearling luggers. With a local guide, discover the island's history and get a feel for island life.

Day 12. Cape York, Cairns
This morning after breakfast, transfer to Horn Island Airport for your flight over the vast Cape York Peninsula. Arrive in Cairns and transfer to your hotel. Enjoy the rest of the evening at leisure.

Day 13. Cairns
Your tour ends after breakfast, when you'll be transferred to the airport for your onward flight.
