Start your adventure in Cairns before flying north to discover Cape York and the surrounding region. Visit Jardine, Mungkan Kandju and Lakefield national parks and explore frontier history in Cooktown before heading south, via Cape Tribulation and the Daintree Rainforest, back to vibrant Cairns.

Itinerary

Day 1. Arrive Cairns
Arrive in Cairns and transfer to your hotel. With the rest of today at leisure, perhaps go shopping, visit the casino or take a stroll around the local markets.
Stay: The Hotel Cairns, close to the CBD and one block from the famous Esplanade

Day 2. Cape York, Thursday Island
Fly from Cairns to Horn Island and enjoy a brief, locally-guided tour. Then head to Thursday Island, one of around 100 islands that make up the Torres Strait Islands. A multicultural outpost that is today home to some 3,000 Torres Strait Islanders, the island was once a base for pearling luggers. Tonight, enjoy dinner with your fellow travellers and Driver/Guide.

Day 3. Thursday Island, Bamaga
Today take a guided tour of Thursday Island. Learn about the history of the island and get a feel for island life. Afterwards, cruise over sparkling Endeavour Strait to the Australian mainland and continue by 4WD to Bamaga.

Day 4. Explore Cape York Peninsula
This morning journey to the very tip of the Cape York Peninsula and experience being at the Australian mainland's most northerly point. After taking in the sweeping views out over the Torres Strait, travel to historic Somerset, once the official government residence of the cape, then return to the resort. Situated on the banks of pretty Mosby Creek, your resort is laid out over several acres of beautiful landscaped gardens and makes a perfect getaway.

Day 5. Fruit Bat Falls, Moreton Telegraph Station
Skirting the Jardine River National Park, today continue through the traditional lands of the Injinoo Aboriginal people. Native title handed much of this area back to the traditional owners, enabling the survival of the distinctive East and West Cape Aboriginal cultures. Stop at Fruit Bat Falls, where there's time for a swim, then continue to Moreton Telegraph Station located on the Wenlock River. The river flows all year, although the levels can vary dramatically between the wet season and the dry season. Here, perhaps take a walk to the nearby lagoon or alongside the river.

Day 6. Weipa
After breakfast, depart Moreton Telegraph Station and travel to Weipa, on the shores of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Weipa is the site of the world's largest bauxite deposit and is also home to fantastic barramundi and blue salmon fishing. Enjoy a fascinating tour of the Weipa Bauxite Mine before returning to your hotel for dinner this evening.

Day 7. Weipa, Coen, Gulf Country
Drive through Mungkan Kandju National Park, a wilderness of open woodlands, melaleuca swamps and rainforest. Watch for birds around the riverbanks and waterlily-covered lagoons. The journey continues to the old goldmining town of Coen, situated on the telegraph line that ran from Laura to Bamaga. After stopping here to explore, continue to the historic Musgrave Telegraph Station, where you'll stay overnight.

Day 8. Lakefield National Park
Journey into Lakefield National Park, Queensland's second largest national park. Stretching from Princess Charlotte Bay down to Laura, the park's near-wilderness is covered with sun-bleached grasses, paperbark woodland, mangroves, swamp and rainforest. It's home to a variety of birds including jabirus, brolgas and many duck species, as well as colonies of fruit bats that take to the skies in the evening, and numerous wallabies. The waterways are home to timid and harmless freshwater crocodiles as well as the more dangerous saltwater crocodiles.

Day 9. Bloomfield Track, Cooktown
Explore Cooktown, gateway to the Cape York Peninsula and the first European settlement on Australian soil. Visit the James Cook Museum and the cemetery with its Chinese shrine. Visit Nature's Powerhouse in the Botanic Gardens, then traverse the Bloomfield Track to Cape Tribulation, where the rainforest meets the sea. This is the only place in Australia where two World Heritage-listed regions meet. Along the way, visit Bloomfield Falls with an Aboriginal guide.

Day 10. Daintree River, Cairns
After a delicious fresh tropical breakfast today, farewell Cape Tribulation and travel to World Heritage-listed Daintree National Park. Here, you'll enjoy a cruise along the Daintree River, watching for wildlife along the banks and saltwater crocodiles that inhabit the river. After the cruise, follow the beautiful coastal road to Cairns.

Day 11. Cairns, Kuranda
Transfer to the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway Terminal and board the Skyrail. Skim over the treetops, stopping at Red Peak and Barron Falls Station. On arrival in Kuranda, catch the free shuttle bus to the markets. Alternatively, walk into Kuranda Village. At Rainforestation Nature Park, watch the Pamagirri Dancers perform in a rainforest amphitheatre. Then, on the Dreamtime Walk, you'll learn to throw a boomerang, watch a display of spear-throwing and enjoy the sounds of the didgeridoo. Afterwards, head to Kuranda Railway Station and board the Kuranda Scenic Railway for a journey through rainforest and steep ravines to Cairns.

Day 12. Cairns at Leisure
Following a relaxed breakfast this morning, the entire day is at your leisure to further discover the delights of this beautiful tropical city. Perhaps wander through Cairns picturesque parks and gardens, stroll the Esplanade or visit the Pier Market Place and Marlin Marina and Jetty for some shopping.

Day 13. Cairns
This morning your tour concludes and you are transferred to the airport for your onward flight.
