Itinerary
Leaving Darwin, we travel south through tropical country passing former World War II airstrips en route to Adelaide River. We make a short stop at the Adelaide River War Cemetery, a site dedicated for those killed in the attacks on Darwin in the 1940's. Continue on to Katherine Gorge where we join a two-hour scenic cruise. Interesting and entertaining commentary provided. Opportunities to see Johnston Crocodiles sunning themselves on the banks and many interesting species of birdlife. There are in fact a series of gorges that make up this natural wonder. Our tour of the first two gorges takes us past sheer rock walls and all manner of flora and fauna. To reach the second gorge requires a short walk before boarding a second cruise vessel. A tasty picnic lunch is included at the Gorge, before enjoying a brief tour of Katherine, fourth largest town in the Territory and hub of the region of cattle and farming lands. We have an afternoon break at picturesque Edith Falls (also in Nitmiluk National Park). There is time for a refreshing swim in the crystal pool beneath the falls. We return via Pine Creek, where we see old Chinese diggings and other historical buildings still standing as monuments to the early pioneers. An evening stop at Adelaide River is made. It is here that you may purchase dinner, sample the famous Northern Territory "Barra and Chips". We return to Darwin approximately 9.00pm.
