Day 2: Kata Tjuta (the Olgas)
Travel to the Uluru sunrise viewing area, Talinguru Nyakunytjaku, to see the Red Centre set alight by the first rays of the sun. Enjoy a cup of tea or coffee as the colours of Uluru gradually change as the sun rises over the horizon. Tour the base of Uluru where you will be introduced to the natural and cultural landscapes of this remarkable region. Enjoy a guided walk into the Mutitjulu Waterhole. View Aboriginal rock paintings and learn about the flora and fauna and Aboriginal history of the area. Visit the Uluru - Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre where there is time to read the Tjukurpa (Aboriginal law) or purchase some locally made Aboriginal art. This afternoon visit the massive series of domes known as Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) and walk into Walpa Gorge. The walking trail through the gorge follows the natural creek between two domes of Kata Tjuta. Enjoy sunset with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine. B
Day 3: Kings Canyon
Travel through the Red Centre of Australia to Kings Canyon. Stop en route at a camel farm for an optional ride on one of these 'ships of the desert'. This afternoon, for the energetic a guided climb to the canyon rim will be rewarded with magnificent views of Watarrka National Park. Or you may prefer to explore the boulder-strewn canyon floor, an easier walk. The sheer red rock face of the canyon soars over 100 metres above lush palm forests, sheltering them from the surrounding desert conditions. The park is a conservation area whose rock holes and gorges provide refuge for over 600 species of plants and many native animals. While the Luritja Aboriginal people have called the area their home for over 20,000 years, it was little known to Europeans until recently. Hotel: Kings Canyon Resort, Kings Canyon. B D
Day 4: Alice Springs
Leaving Watarrka National Park behind us we travel through to Alice Springs, at the doorstep to the Red Centre. Tour the sights of 'The Alice' including a visit to the historic Telegraph Station. At the Royal Flying Doctor Service you will see how medical aid reaches those who live in the remote outback. Enjoy a panoramic view of Alice Springs from Anzac Hill and then visit the largest Aboriginal art gallery in Australia. Mbantua Aboriginal Art Gallery and Cultural Museum is home to a large collection of Aboriginal artwork including dot paintings, symbols, Aboriginal drawings and indigenous sculpture from the Central Desert region of Australia. Day 5: West MacDonnell Ranges
Travel west from Alice Springs following the spectacular West MacDonnell Ranges. Pass the John Flynn Memorial. Stop at Simpsons Gap with its lovely red gum scenery. Continue on to magical Angkerle (Standley Chasm) for morning tea. Walk into the Chasm along the stony watercourse lined with cycads, ghost gums, acacias and cypress pines. Travel to Ellery Creek Big Hole before arriving at Ormiston Gorge. We travel on to Glen Helen Gorge, a semi permanent waterhole. Enjoy a Ploughman's lunch with fresh damper. Depending on the time of the year a refreshing swim may be possible at one of the waterholes. Nearby is the Mt. Sonder lookout. This beautiful mountain was the subject of many paintings by the famed Aboriginal artist and Arrernte tribesman, the late Albert Namatjira. B L
Day 6: Depart Alice Springs
Your tour concludes today after breakfast. You will be transferred to Alice Springs Airport for your onward flight. Or if you wish to stay longer in Alice Springs you may join an optional 4WD safari down the bed of the Finke river into Palm Valley. Or appreciate the vast remoteness and wildlife of the Australian outback on a hot air balloon flight. B
